"29" refers to Demi Lovato's relationship with actor Wilmer Valderrama.
Demi Lovato premieres new single '29' ahead of her 'HOLY FVCK' album release this Friday, August 19th.
'HOLY FVCK', Demi Lovato's eighth album, is a sonic journey grounded in her rock and pop-punk roots and an honest yet slick look back at her life experiences.
The album features 16 songs, including the previously released 'Skin Of My Teeth' and 'Substance', as well as contributions from YUNGBLUD, Royal & The Serpent and Dead Sara.
"29", the third single from "HOLY FVCK", refers to Demi Lovato's relationship with American actor Wilmer Valderrama and the 12-year age difference between them.
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama met when the singer was 17 and the actor was 29 and were in a relationship from 2010 to 2016. However, Lovato has previously stated that Valderrama did not want them to pursue a relationship until he was an adult.
Upon its release, Demi Lovato briefly described 29 on Twitter as "a song about the wisdom that comes with age."
In the song's lyrics, Demi Lovato examines her relationship with Wilmer Valderrama from a retrospective perspective.
The lyrics evolve throughout the song showing Lovato's growth. In the first chorus, she questions whose fantasy it really was, and when she reaches the final chorus, she confirms her doubts.
She realizes that while she thought it was her "teenage dream" or "fantasy" to be in a relationship with an older man, it was actually Valderrama's fantasy of being in a relationship with someone much younger than him.
“At last 29 / Funny, just like you were then / I thought it was a teenage dream, just a fantasy / But was it yours or was it mine? / 17, 29,” he sings.
Demi Lovato comes to this conclusion after looking back at Valderrama's long history of relationships, which primarily favored younger women. It also seems to take aim at Wilmer Valderrama's current relationship with model Amanda Pacheco, who is 12 years younger than the actor.
Demi Lovato will perform "29" for the first time on television on Jimmy Fallon's "The Tonight Show" on Thursday night, August 18, as part of her three-day run on the show.
The singer appeared as a co-host on the Wednesday, August 17 episode, participating in the show's monologue and guest interviews.
