The Australian plant bugs include four species with names linked to Taylor Swift and her music, turning a playful pop-culture reference into part of formal scientific taxonomy while also bringing attention to the huge number of insect species still waiting to be studied.
Taylor Swift now has something far more unusual than another chart record attached to her name: an entire genus of insects inspired by the Swiftie community. Researchers have officially described Swiftiephylus, a newly recognized group of plant-feeding bugs from Australia, and the Taylor Swift connection goes much deeper than one catchy scientific name. Four species inside the genus also carry names that point toward the singer, her music and words closely associated with her career.
The naming comes from a scientific study involving researchers at the University of California, Riverside and published in Insect Systematics and Evolution. The work describes 12 species that were new to science, with Swiftiephylus becoming the most pop-culture-friendly part of the project. Its name combines “Swiftie,” the familiar name used by Taylor Swift fans, with “Phylus,” a naming element already used within this group of insects.
Inside the genus are Swiftiephylus taylorae, Swiftiephylus amator, Swiftiephylus intrepidus and Swiftiephylus poetorum. The names were chosen with clear references to Taylor Swift’s world, with links to Taylor, “lover,” “fearless” and “poets.” They are still formal Latin-style scientific names rather than simple translated album titles, which is an important distinction. What makes them fun is that anyone familiar with Swift’s music can immediately see where the inspiration came from.
The idea came partly from Sarah Schroeder, a doctoral researcher in entomology and a longtime Swiftie herself. For Schroeder, naming the insects after Taylor Swift was personal, but it was also a way to make people curious about a part of science they might normally scroll past. A new plant bug from Australia may not instantly attract a huge pop audience, but connect that bug to Taylor Swift and suddenly thousands of people have a reason to learn what it is, where it lives and why scientists are studying it.

That means the discovery story happened in stages. The insects had physically existed in scientific collections for years, but researchers still needed to examine them closely, compare their anatomy and work out how they were related to other known species. Only after that detailed work could they be formally described as species that were new to science.
That delay is not unusual in entomology. Museum collections can contain huge numbers of specimens waiting for specialists to study them. A tiny insect may sit in a collection for years or even decades before someone has the time, expertise and comparative material needed to understand exactly what it is. The insects themselves are closely associated with Australian casuarina trees and shrubs. These plants can grow in very different environments, including coastal dunes, tropical areas and places exposed to intense heat. Many plant-feeding bugs develop a close relationship with a particular host plant and may spend much of their life cycle on it, from hatching through adulthood and eventually laying eggs.
That connection makes host plants extremely important when scientists study these insects. Similar colors have also appeared in more distant insect relatives that live on the same plants, raising the possibility that this type of camouflage developed separately in different groups.
Swiftiephylus belongs to Miridae, the largest family of what scientists call true bugs. More than 11,000 species have already been described around the world, making it an enormous and highly varied insect family. The newly named Taylor Swift-inspired bugs are not known to pose a danger to people or animals and are not currently described as major pests.
Their importance is instead connected to biodiversity. They are another reminder that even after centuries of biological study, scientists still have a huge amount to learn about insect life. Many species remain unnamed, especially in regions with extraordinary plant and animal diversity such as Australia.
Of all the new names, Swiftiephylus poetorum may be the easiest for Taylor Swift fans to connect with her modern career. “Poetorum” points toward “poets,” making it almost impossible not to think of the language surrounding The Tortured Poets Department. Still, it would be too simple to describe the scientific name as a direct Latin version of that album title. It works more naturally as another playful reference within a set of names inspired by Swift’s music and image.
The same care applies to Swiftiephylus amator and Swiftiephylus intrepidus. Fans will quickly recognize the links to “Lover” and “Fearless,” but the names belong inside a formal scientific naming system. That contrast is exactly what makes the whole project so appealing. Pop culture supplies the entry point, while taxonomy gives the names a much longer and more serious life.
Taylor Swift is effectively acting as a bridge between two worlds that rarely share the same headline. A fan who would never normally search for information about Miridae, Australian casuarinas or insect classification may suddenly end up reading about all three because the word Swiftie appears in a scientific name. For researchers trying to make biodiversity more visible, that attention can be useful.
Schroeder has said that honoring Taylor Swift was connected to a wider desire to celebrate conservation science and the enormous amount of biological diversity that still remains unknown. Taxonomy can sound like one of the driest corners of science when reduced to the idea of “naming things,” but those names allow researchers to communicate clearly about species, track where they occur and build the information needed for conservation.
There is also something very fitting about Swifties themselves becoming part of the story rather than only Taylor Swift. The genus is not simply called after the singer’s surname. Swiftiephylus directly borrows from the name of her fan community, giving the fandom a surprisingly permanent place inside scientific literature.
That permanence is what separates the story from a temporary internet joke. Once a scientific name is formally published and accepted under taxonomic rules, it can continue appearing in research papers, collections, databases and future studies for decades. New researchers may eventually study Swiftiephylus ecology, genetics, distribution or evolution, and the Swiftie-inspired name will travel with the genus.
Taylor Swift herself had not publicly responded to the naming when the original report appeared. In some ways, though, her reaction is not necessary for the story to work.
