Beyoncé wins first primetime Emmy for stunning Beyoncé Bowl Netflix special

Beyoncé wins her first Primetime Emmy for the spectacular Beyoncé Bowl Netflix special, transforming the NFL halftime show into an unforgettable blend of music, fashion, and live entertainment

Beyoncé, the global icon who has dominated stages across the world, just added another milestone to her career — and it’s one she’s never achieved before. The “Queen Bey” has won her very first Primetime Emmy, earning the award for the electrifying Beyoncé Bowl special that turned an NFL halftime show into a Netflix Christmas Day event to remember.

The Television Academy announced the news on August 12 as part of the winners in the juried categories of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. These categories — which include areas like animation, costumes, emerging media production, and motion design — are decided by panels of experts rather than standard nominee lists. Beyoncé’s win came in the category Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Programming, honoring the aesthetic excellence, creativity, and precision that define her performances.

The Beyoncé Bowl was far more than a halftime performance — it was a meticulously staged spectacle fusing music, fashion, and sports into one unforgettable show. Alongside Beyoncé, the Emmy also recognized her costume design team: Shiona Turini (co-designer), Erica Rice and Molly Peters (assistant designers), Chelsea Staebell (costume supervisor), and Timothy White (costume workroom supervisor).

Held on December 25, 2024, the event marked Netflix’s first live-streamed NFL game on Christmas Day. At halftime, Beyoncé took over with a series of jaw-dropping looks, blending elements from American football culture with her own distinctive aesthetic.

The juried Emmy categories are notoriously demanding. Instead of a traditional shortlist of nominees, a panel reviews entries through open discussion and detailed evaluation of every aspect. Projects can receive no awards at all or share the recognition among multiple creators if they meet the Academy’s high standards.

The official Emmy ceremony will take place on September 6 and 7 at the Peacock Theater in L.A. Live, with a specially edited broadcast airing September 13 on FXX.

This year has been especially exciting for Beyoncé. The Beyoncé Bowl is still in the running for two more Primetime Emmys — Outstanding Variety Special (Live), where she is both performer and executive producer, and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, alongside director Alex Rudzinski.

Beyoncé’s career already boasts a record-breaking 35 Grammy Awards — more than any artist in Grammy history. In 2022, she was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Be Alive” from King Richard, co-written with DIXSON. Now, with an Emmy added to her list of honors, she’s inching closer to EGOT status, cementing her dominance across multiple creative arenas.

Her Emmy win reinforces her reputation as a visionary who never stops raising the bar. From groundbreaking tours to innovative film and television projects, Beyoncé continues to redefine what’s possible in entertainment. Whether she’s captivating stadium audiences or streaming viewers worldwide, the “Queen Bey” remains a force whose artistry and influence show no signs of slowing down.
