Dove Cameron did not expect that the queer anthem of "Boyfriend" would break on TikTok and that would forever change the way music is released.
Speaking to Billboard, the 26-year-old singer and actress recalled posting a nine-second clip of "Boyfriend" on TikTok, which went viral.
"I was so shocked when it broke. I was stunned, my mouth fell on the floor, I updated the page with the reconstructions every hour. I was thinking "what is happening?". "It was like someone was doing magic in a song," he recalled.
"I could not detach myself from how creative people became. The sign that a song has been loved is when people take it and do something else that is important to them. "It's so flattering," he added.
"I never thought it would end up in the EP, to be honest," she added, referring to the new EP she is preparing.
Regarding the moment "Boydriend" was born, Dove Cameron described: "I'm telling the story of this crazy night I spent a few weeks ago. And in the middle of telling this crazy story, I think I accidentally said something in the room like, "I could be her boyfriend better than this guy."
"Many of them became a description of how I felt when she grew up as a queer and I was surrounded by all these women who, as she is known, were mistreated and not praised enough," she continued.

Dove Cameron also commented that her upcoming EP draws in part inspiration from "many classic male cinematic bad characters in some of her favorite movies."
"Not because of their history, but because of their attitude. I am influenced in everything by cinema. "" Boyfriend is very orchestral, "he said.
He also revealed that TikTok will now play a bigger role in the songs he chooses to release.
"I have a new song called 'Breakfast' and I'll check out how people feel about the chorus." If the song resonates on TikTok, it will be released.
"It's an amazing cycle of instant feedback we've never had in the music industry and it will allow me and other artists to release music more directly," he said.
"You could say, 'I wrote this last week and I're going to release it next week.' "It's really liberating," Dove Cameron added.
